A study out this month by the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute finds that a larger share of U.S. households do not own a car, light truck or SUV. In 2012, 9.22% of all U.S. households were without a vehicle, little changed from 9.29% in 2011 but continuing an uptrend started since 2007, just before the economy fell into recession.
What’s behind the vehicle avoidance?

According to a recent survey , many factors can influence a household’s decision to own a car, such as income, availability and cost of parking and local weather, but “the five cities with the highest proportions of households without a vehicle were all among the top five cities in a recent ranking of the quality of public transportation

Reading

Have you heard of Martin Luther King, Jr.? Every year on the third Monday of January, Americans have a holiday. It's called Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a famous man.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was...
born in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States in 1929. At that time in America, black people didn't have equal rights with white people. Black people had to sit in the back of buses. The schools were segregated and there were even separate public restrooms for black people and white people. Black people's lives were not very good.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a minister in the Baptist Church. He fought against racial segregation. He wanted equal rights for all people. But he didn't use violence in his fight. He asked people to fight peacefully. For example, he asked black people to ride in the front of the bus. More than 200,000 people went to Washington D.C. to listen to him speak and ask the government to change unfair laws.

Because of Martin Luther King, Jr., many laws began to change in the United States. But many white people disagreed with him and his ways. In 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated by a white man.

Every year on the third Monday of January, Americans remember Martin Luther King, Jr. They try to remember how much America has changed. And they think about how much more America should change in the future.

Ways to Screw Up Your Life:

Photo: 10 Ways to Screw Up Your Life:

1. Regret stuff.

There is nothing you can do about choices you have already made. It is done and constantly thinking about them will only bring you down. Let it go, accept your choice and move on.

2. Sleep more than you need.

You know the saying, everything in moderation. It is also said that over-sleeping is a sign of depression. Hiding from your mundane life or the realities of it through sleep will not benefit you in anyway. Get up and get through it or change it.

3. Work harder than you can.

For the sake of your health, know your physical limits and do not defy them. Your boss, friends, family, career, or whatever it may be should never come before your health. These things will not save you if you lose your health for them.

4. Gossip

This is a surefire way to screw up your relationships. Gossiping about someone only means your relationship is not strong enough. You can bet that they are gossiping about you, too. This relates to number 5.

5. Choose and stay in the wrong friendships.

Apart from gossiping about a friend, doing things you hate for them is another sign that you do not need that friendship. A true friendship means you are comfortable with who you are. You will screw up your life if you constantly have to pretend you are someone you are not.

6. Quit

Quitters never win, and winners never quit. This applies to life. Always do your best and persevere. Do not quit because you are running away from responsibility. Let go only when you have already done everything in your power to make something happen.

7. Walk your life in somebody else's shoes.

Do not live based on someone else's expectations. Yes, your family has goals and dreams for you. But if they are not your own too, there is no reason for you to act like it is. You have to deal with your choices, not them.

8. Try to please everybody.

It is impossible to make everyone happy. You will lose yourself in the process. It is an unnecessary burden that will screw you and your life up.

9. Don't manage your money.

Money is not the most important thing in the world, but that does not mean you should spend it on things you cannot afford. It still plays a part in our world, so know how to manage it. That will save you from a lot of trouble.

10. Lie to yourself.

When you lie to yourself, there is no one to correct you and there is no one else to blame. Be honest with yourself. It is for your own good. Internally struggling with the truth will only damage you.

It is never too late to make a change. Start now before your screw up your life.

 Ways to Manage Stress

1. Eliminate as many sources of stress as possible.

If you are claustrophobic, for example, do not visit tiny, crowded stores. Triggering your phobias can cause a lot of anxiety. Try to avoid the triggers.

2. Plan your day better.

Ever find that you are always rushing? Feeling short of time also causes undue stress. Find time to sit and jot down how much time you take for each of your daily activities. Seeing it on paper may help you fix your timings.

3. Avoid predictably stressful situations.

If playing poker with your buddies worries you, skip it. Just sit back and watch instead, stress-free. You will still bond with your friends without straining yourself.

4. Take a time-out.

Though it is normally a punishment for children, sometimes having alone time is just what you need. Do something that relaxes you, like catch up on your favorite show or listen to some soothing music.

5. Do not engage in unhealthy competition.

There are parts of life that require competition (like in business or at work), but the “I-have-more-than-youâ€‌ competition is not one of them. If you have a friend who’s goal is to make you jealous, try not to engage. It is easier said than done (especially when your friend is being a prick), but in the long-term it rids you of unnecessary tension.

6. Think before you buy a laborsaving device.

What you save on labor, you add in stress. Mobile phones that do everything encourage you to do everything at once. What you thought could reduce your workload, forces you to cram activities into a shorter time frame instead.

7. Try doing one thing at a time.

It is better to do one task at a time. Not only will you focus on it better and deliver great results, you will feel more relaxed, too. Start small. For example, do not use your mobile phone while typing on the computer.

8. Sometimes, do nothing.

Our minds tend to work all the time. Give your mind (and body) a break once in awhile and do nothing. You will be surprised how energizing this is.

9. If you suffer from chronic ailments, see if it is due to stress.

Stress can sometimes lead to insomnia, headaches or even chronic colds. Think about what is causing it. Maybe you are often angry or irritated. If so, try to find ways to help your mood.

10. If you feel stress is taking over your life, see a doctor or therapist.

There is no shame in asking for help. There have been cases of excessive stress leading to depression and even suicide. Make sure you take control of the problem before it gets worse.

Remember, avoid unnecessary stress, plan ahead and make sure to relax. Oftentimes, we put ourselves in situations that needlessly pressure us. Knowing what sets you off and finding ways around them help manage stress.

Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? If you answered more happy, then you were right, based on a study in 2008. It found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age fifty. In fact, it found that by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were at eighteen.

The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than three hundred forty thousand adults in the United States in two thousand eight. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.

Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties.

The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.

The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.

So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.

Happiness is not the only thing that apparently improves with age. In a study, people in their eighties reported the fewest problems with the quality of their sleep.

Researchers surveyed more than one hundred fifty thousand American adults.
The original goal was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older.

The Tortoise and the Eagle. لاک پشت و عقاب

A TORTOISE, lazily basking in the sun, complained to the sea-birds of her hard fate, that no one would teach her to fly.
لاک پشتی زیر نور افتاب دراز کشیده بودو از بخت و اقبال بد خود به مرغان دریایی شکایت می کرد. اینکه هیچ کسی به چگونه پرواز کردن را اموزش نمیدهد

An Eagle, hovering near, heard her lamentation and demanded what reward she would give him ...
if he would take her aloft and float her in the air. “I will give you,” she said, “all the riches of the Red Sea.

“I will teach you to fly then,” said the Eagle; and taking her up in his talons he carried her almost to the clouds suddenly he let her go, and she fell on a lofty mountain, dashing her shell to pieces.

The Tortoise exclaimed in the moment of death: “I have deserved my present fate; for what had I to do with wings and clouds,
در لحظه مرگ این جمله را به زبان اورد: من لایق سرنوشت حاضر خود هستم
برای چه مجبورم که بال داشته باشم و روی ابرها باشم

Things You Should Be Able to Say About Yourself

Things You Should Be Able to Say About Yourself

Your individuality is your strongest aspect. Everything and anything you do reflects your individuality, because you do it in a special, unique way. Being good and honest with oneself is one of the best things you can do. To know that you are doing good to the world and people around you, there are some things you should be able to say about yourself. Here are things that, if you say to yourself, make you a positive person!

freedom

1. I am following my heart and intuition.

Problems in your life will always try to push you back, but it is you who has to come out strong in any/under any given situation. Just live the way you want to live and be led by your dreams. Stand on your decisions and make yourself a person who you will remember years from now. Follow what your heart says! Lessons that wrong decisions teach are worth not taking the right decision.

2. I am proud of myself.

Do not be a person with low self-esteem. You are your own biggest and best critic. People can understand you, sympathize with you, but will never be able to feel exactly the way you do. You are unique. Be good, do good, and be proud of what you’ve done.

3. I am making a difference.

You are here to serve a purpose. Do things that give you a feeling as if you are contributing towards people around you and making a significant difference. This would boost your confidence and self-esteem. Even though you are one, you make a difference.

4. I am happy and grateful.

Happiness is not lying in any part of the world, under a stone, up on a hill, or elsewhere; it is in your heart, and only you can find it. Be happy and grateful for what you are. There are millions of unfortunates around you. Be grateful to the Almighty and serve the ones who need it the most.

5. I am growing in to the best version of me.

The time you stop moving ahead, you are almost dead. Don’t only exist, but live. Make your life worth it. Improve with every passing moment.

6. I am making my time count.

Find your passion and work to achieve it. The time you have spent won’t come back, ever. It’s your present that you can make use of. It is the present time that you can make count. Enjoy your life the way you want to. Make every moment count!

7. I am honest with myself.

To the world you might be a liar, but be true and honest to yourself. Once you cheat on yourself, you lose your worth. You are the only person you can count on.

8. I am good to those I care about.

Care about people around you, care about people who care about you. Show affection to the ones you care about. Put in extra effort to show that you care.

9. I know what unconditional love feels like.

Love unconditionally; because that is the only way you can love truly. Love is beautiful and unpredictable. When you love unconditionally, it is not because the person you love is perfect, it is because you learn to see an imperfect person perfectly.

10. I have forgiven the ones who once hurt me.

Learn to forgive and forget. Your trust was broken, but you have to get over it, as soon as possible; the sooner, the better. Let the hard time go. Do not occupy your mind with bad feelings. You have lot many productive things to do in life.

All in all, at every point in time, try to be a good human being and live your life to fullest; because you are special, unique, and you won’t get this life again!

Food Expressions,

My mother always told us there is no use crying over spilled milk. That means you should not get angry when something bad happens and cannot be changed. People said my mother was a good egg. She would always help anyone in need. We never had to walk on eggshells around her. We did not have to be careful about what we said or did because she never got angry at us. She also told us you have to break some eggs to make an omelet. This means you have to do what is necessary to move forward.

My mother believed you are what you eat. A good diet is important for good health. She would always give us nutritious food. She liked serving us meat and potatoes for dinner. Meat and potatoes can also mean the most important part of something. It describes someone who likes simple things. Here is another expression about meat: one man’s meat is another man’s poison. In other words, one person might like something very much while another person might hate the same thing.

My father was also a good and honest person. People said he was the salt of the earth. He would never pour salt on a wound, or make someone feel worse about something that was already a painful experience. However, sometimes he told us a story that seemed bigger than life. So we had to take it with a grain of salt. That is, we could not believe everything he told us.

My husband has a good job. He makes enough money to support our family. So we say he brings home the bacon. He can cut the mustard, or do what is expected of him at work. It is easy to find my husband in a crowd. He stands almost two meters tall. He is a tall drink of water.

I take the train to work. It is not a pleasant ride because the train can be full of people. It is so crowded that we are packed like sardines – just like small fish in a can.

My supervisor at work is sometimes out to lunch. She is out of touch and does not always know what is going on in our office. Yet she is right about one thing: there is no such thing as a free lunch. Something may appear to be free of charge, but there may be a hidden cost.

When we fail to see problems at work, my supervisor tells us to wake up and smell the coffee. We need to pay more attention and fix the problem.

I once made a big mistake at the office and felt foolish. I had egg on my face.

Over the weekend, my friend invited me to watch a football game on television. But I do not like football. It is not my cup of tea.

Think – Put First Things First

A major part of successful living lies in the ability to put first things first. Indeed the reason most major goals are not achieved is that we spend our time doing second things first.” -Robert J. McKain.

Remember, this is about how to manage your time and life. Think about the way you are using your time. Do you use your time well? Do you focus on things which matter most? Do you spend significant amount of time on things which can make a big difference in your life? If you don’t put first then you cannot be successful, you simply cannot achieve your biggest goal. You must understand what the most important things to do in your life. You must apply resourcefulness to ensure massive progress.

Think! Think about the way to make a big difference in your life. Think about the way to ensure massive progress. Think about the way to do the best with all of the available resources. What are your ultimate missions? It is about doing the best with all of the available resources. It is about using the power of focus to ensure great progress. It is about making the most of your time to get the most important things done.

Putting First Things First is the way to achieve big goals in this life. If you know how to achieve big goals, then you know how to succeed in life. It is about doing the very best, using the power of concentration. Concentrate on the most important, then you can make a big difference in your life.

Now is the best time to begin the journey toward the greatest success on earth. Now is the best time to make the most of every opportunity. Now is your chance to make tremendous progress by PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST. You can make a big difference! You can achieve the big goals! You can achieve significant success on earth. You can enjoy a lifelong progress. It is about the tremendous amount of opportunity that must be seized to ensure massive progress in your life.

Most Common Dreams and Their Meanings

Dreams are your companion when you sleep. They say, if you do not dream, you are missing on imagination. Plus, science says, the more you dream, the better it is. According to some positive thinkers, one should dream big to achieve big. Well, believe it or not, most of the people in the world dream a lot.

But, dreams vary with your mood, state of mind, your psyche, and much more. Why is it that I always see someone chasing me and why is that my friend always feels he is falling continuously. Well, I am talking about the type of dreams people usually see. They say that every dream has a meaning attached to it! Today, I bring you 10 of the most common dreams and their respective meanings. Connect yourself, if you can!

1. Being Chased

If you often dream that someone is chasing you, it means that your subconscious mind is indicating that you have been avoiding something/someone that is painful or frightening to you. Going deeper into the dream, what matters more is who is chasing you and what is your relationship with that person. Do you know that person?

2. Falling

It is one of the most common dreams people have reported – falling and falling and continuing to call. It could possibly mean that things are not going right in your life. According to some specialists, it could also be an indication from your subconscious mind that something in your life is going in a terribly wrong direction. More or less, people suffering from depression have reported falling in their dreams.

3. Losing Teeth

Specialists say that losing teeth could indicate loss in confidence. It could also mean that you are worried about your outlook and are concerned about a particular feature of your body.

4. Dying

A lot of people report seeing themselves (or their close relatives) dead in their dreams. A lot of dream interpreters say that death in dream could symbolize a new start or spiritual transformation. Seeing someone close as dead in dream could mean that you are parting ways with that person emotionally.

5. Water

Dreaming about water is considered good by some experts, as it symbolizes purification, change, and transformation of life. Going deeper into this, what decides further interpretation is whether you’ve seen a big water body, flowing river, waterfall, whether you are offer/receiving water, etc.

Openness is the degree to which a person is curious, original, intellectual, creative, and open to new ideas. People high in openness seem to thrive in situations that require flexibility and learning new things.

They are highly motivated to learn new skills, and they do well in training settings. They also have an advantage when they enter into a new organization.

Their open-mindedness leads them to seek a lot of information and feedback about how they are doing and to build relationships, which leads to quicker adjustment to the new job.

When given support, they tend to be creative. Open people are highly adaptable to change, and teams that experience unforeseen changes in their tasks do well if they are populated with people high in openness.

Compared with people low in openness, they are also more likely to start their own business. The potential downside is that they may also be prone to becoming more easily bored or impatient with routine.

At some point in your life you will need an antibiotic. It’s important to understand all of the information that the pharmacist provides you with the drug and to ask your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Make sure that your doctor and pharmacist are aware of any drugs you are currently taking because it could affect the dosage or types of antibiotics you are allowed to take

Only use antibiotics during the period you are prescribed by a doctor. Using leftover antibiotics to cure symptoms that you have could cause drug resistant pathogens to form, enabling antibiotics from effectively working. After taking antibiotics for the appropriate duration, if you have any leftover then throw away the remaining

Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. So when you or your children have a cold or flu, an antibiotic won’t clear anything up. The cold has to run its course

When an antibiotic is prescribed, take all of it even if symptoms disappear. If treatment stops too soon, some bacteria may survive and re-infect

Individuals taking birth control pills should use a second method of birth control when taking antibiotics or others drugs that can increase the breakdown of estrogens. Some antibiotics increase the breakdown of estrogens which decrease the levels of estrogen in the body and the effectiveness of the pill

Most antibiotics can cause digestive problems. Many doctors recommend that you keep your diet very simple and not to eat complex foods because your body may have a hard time breaking down those elements. Check the side effects label that is disbursed by the pharmacist. If symptoms become chronic, discontinue use and contact your doctor immediately

Colorful Expressions

Many everyday American expressions are based on colors.

Red is a hot color. Americans often use it to express heat. They may say they are red hot about something unfair. When they are red hot they are very angry about something. The small hot tasting peppers found in many Mexican foods are called red hots for their color and their fiery taste. Fast loud music is popular with many people. They may say the music is red hot, especially the kind called Dixieland jazz.

Pink is a lighter kind of red. People sometimes say they are in the pink when they are in good health. The expression was first used in America at the beginning of the twentieth century. It probably comes from the fact that many babies are born with a nice pink color that shows that they are in good health.

Blue is a cool color. The traditional blues music in the United States is the opposite of red hot music. Blues is slow, sad and soulful. Duke Ellington and his orchestra recorded a famous song – Mood Indigo – about the deep blue color, indigo. In the words of the song: “You ain’t been blue till you’ve had that Mood Indigo.” Someone who is blue is very sad.

The color green is natural for trees and grass. But it is an unnatural color for humans. A person who has a sick feeling stomach may say she feels a little green. A passenger on a boat who is feeling very sick from high waves may look very green.

Sometimes a person may be upset because he does not have something as nice as a friend has, like a fast new car. That person may say he is green with envy. Some people are green with envy because a friend has more dollars or greenbacks. Dollars are called greenbacks because that is the color of the back side of the paper money.

The color black is used often in expressions. People describe a day in which everything goes wrong as a black day. The date of a major tragedy is remembered as a black day. A blacklist is illegal now. But at one time, some businesses refused to employ people who were on a blacklist for belonging to unpopular organizations.

In some cases, colors describe a situation. A brown out is an expression for a reduction in electric power. Brown outs happen when there is too much demand for electricity. The electric system is unable to offer all the power needed in an area. Black outs were common during World War Two. Officials would order all lights in a city turned off to make it difficult for enemy planes to find a target in the dark of night.

Smart  goals

Are you motivated simply because you have set a goal? The mere presence of a goal does not motivate individuals. Think about New Year’s resolutions that you made but failed to keep. Maybe you decided that you should lose some weight but then never put a concrete plan in action. Maybe you decided that you would read more but didn’t. Why did your goal fail?

Accumulating research evidence indicates that effective goals are SMART. A SMART goal is a goal that is specific, measurable, aggressive, realistic, and time-bound.

Effective goals are specific and measurable. For example, “increasing sales to a region by 10%” is a specific goal, whereas deciding to “delight customers” is not specific or measurable. When goals are specific, performance tends to be higher. Why? If goals are not specific and measurable, how would you know whether you have reached the goal? A wide distribution of performance levels could potentially be acceptable. For the same reason, “doing your best” is not an effective goal, because it is not measurable and does not give you a specific target.

Certain aspects of performance are easier to quantify. For example, it is relatively easy to set specific goals for productivity, sales, number of defects, or turnover rates. However, not everything that is easy to measure should be measured. Moreover, some of the most important elements of someone’s performance may not be easily quantifiable (such as employee or customer satisfaction). So how do you set specific and measurable goals for these soft targets? Even though some effort will be involved, metrics such as satisfaction can and should be quantified. For example, you could design a survey for employees and customers to track satisfaction ratings from year to year.

Aggressive

This may sound counterintuitive, but effective goals are difficult, not easy. Aggressive goals are also called stretch goals. According to a Hay Group study, one factor that distinguishes companies that are ranked as “Most Admired Companies” in Fortune magazine is that they set more difficult goals. People with difficult goals outperform those with easier goals. Why? Easy goals do not provide a challenge. When goals are aggressive and require people to work harder or smarter, performance tends to be dramatically higher. Research shows that people who have a high level of self-efficacy and people who have a high need for achievement tend to set more difficult goals for themselves.

Realistic

While goals should be difficult, they should also be based in reality. In other words, if a goal is viewed as impossible to reach, it will not have any motivational value. In fact, setting impossible goals and then punishing people for not reaching these goals is cruel and will demotivate employees.

Time-Bound

The goal should contain a statement regarding when the proposed performance level will be reached. For example, “increasing sales to a region by 10%” is not a time-bound goal, because there is no time limit. Adding a limiter such as “by December of the current fiscal year” gives employees a sense of time urgency.

Here is a sample SMART goal: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. recently set a goal to eliminate 25% of the solid waste from U.S. stores by the year 2009. This goal meets all the conditions of being SMART (as long as 25% is a difficult yet realistic goal). Even though it seems like a simple concept, in reality many goals that are set within organizations may not be SMART. For example, Microsoft recently conducted an audit of its goal setting and performance review system and found that only about 40% of the goals were specific and measurable.
